摘要 PURPOSE:To make it possible to flexibly set density-to-gradation characteristics, to easily cope with variations in bleeding in recording, variations in properties of a thermal recording paper used or the like and to obtain favorable gradation properties, by setting the number of matrix elements in a reference matrix to be greater than the number of gradations to be recorded, in an intermediate gradational recording method in which the presence or absence of record or an output signal is determined in relation to an input signal. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of matrix elements having the values of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 are set, and for a high gradation part to which the sence of slight is dull, the elements are used with an increment (or decrement) of one or two gradations. Each of the values is compared with an input signal digitized in the range of 1-16, and when the value of the input signal is greater than the value of the matrix element, a recording signal is outputted. Since this reference matrix is a centralized-type matrix, lowering in the resolution in an intermediate gradation region is light. The graph represents a density-gradation relationship in the case recording 16 gradations by use of a dispersed-type 4X4 reference matrix, and a curve shown is greatly curved at a central part due to the presence of bleeding. This can be converted to a linear gradation-density characteristic.
