PURPOSE:To prevent direct transmission of the influence of an outside layer to an inside layer side by forming a protective coating of >=2 layers consisting of the inside layer and the outside layer having the Young's modulus higher than the Young's modulus of the inside layer and providing a stress relieving layer between the protective-coated layers. CONSTITUTION:A relieving layer 4 is provided between the soft inside layer 2 which is the coating of an optical fiber 1 and the outside layer 3 having high strength (the Young's modulus higher than the Young's modulus of the inside layer). A preferable example of such stress relieving layer 4 is provision of a gap. More specifically, a layer which can relieve the stress of the outside layer is provided between the inside layer and the outside layer in such a manner as to, for example, generate the gap. Then, the use of such a high-strength outside layer material which is heretofore unusable is possible. The post handling is thereby facilitated; in the case of, for example, an optical fiber, high- speed production to form a cable from the optical fibers is permitted. Cable design is facilitated and the cost is reduced in such a case.
