PURPOSE:To shorten the access time of a dynamic RAM and increase overall printing speed relatively inexpensively, by reducing the number of accesses through multiplying the memory width of one address, and converting the direction or size of a character pattern through combining a process for returning the memory width of one address to an original value. CONSTITUTION:For example, character patterns are so stored that a memory width equal to two times a raster width can be accessed with one address. The character patterns for one line which are read from a character pattern memory 10 in a form 1 are sequentially sent to a memory width converting circuit 21, where the memory width is converted to a form 2, and the character patterns thus processed are stored into a pattern buffer 22. The character patterns are rotated by 90 deg., thereby converting the patterns in a form (a) into the patterns in a form (b). The character patterns in the form (b) obtained by a change in direction are once stored into a pattern modification transferring circuit 23. Each raster pattern is sent to a raster buffer 24 comprising three raster memories having a doubled memory width, and the raster patterns are sequentially developed and stored into a bit map memory 12.
