PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain the desired reset characteristics of a swash plate correspondingly to lever operation by making a valve plate rotatable in any direction in the swash plate type piston pump whose discharge quantity can be controlled by changing the stroke of a piston according to the tiltingly rotating angle of a swash plate. CONSTITUTION:A swash plate 16 is rotatably provided with trunnion pins 16 attached to its both ends as center, and the stroke of plural pistons 14 slideably accomodated in a cylinder block 11 is changed according to the tiltingly rotating angle alpha of the swash plate 15 to change the discharge quantity of a pump. In this pump, a valve plate 17 is arranged on the side of the cylinder block 11 opposite to the swash plate 15, and made surface contact on the side of the cylinder block 11. The central part of the other side of the valve plate 17 is formed with a spherical projection 18, which is fitted in a spherical recess 20 formed on a port block 19 to make the valve plate 17 rotatable in any direction. Thus the cylinder block 11 is also made rotatable in any direction within the range of clearance between the block 11 and an input shaft.
