PURPOSE:To small decrease a difference between the initial friction coefficient and the stable friction coefficient, by manufacturing a friction material which forms surface-shaped grooves. CONSTITUTION:A friction material 1 forms on its surface a surface-shaped groove 2. A protrusive part, formed by this groove, is preferable to provide a shape of rectangular parallelepiped, quadrangular pyramid, triangular pyramid, etc. The groove is desired to provide its depth to about 0.1-3.0mm. This groove, when it is formed, is obtained by heating and pressurizing a friction material molding stuff, consisting of, for instance, fiber of asbestos, glass, etc., as necessary a friction adjusting agent or the like, by a rugged metal mold 3. The friction material, such as formed in the above, destructs its protrusive part in a short time, placing a friction interface in a steady condition in a short time by forming a friction dust in the friction interface between the friction material and the fellow material.
