NEW MATERIAL:The 2-nitro-5-(substituted phenoxy)benzohydroximic acid derivative of formula I [R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> is H or lower alkyl; R is (substituted) alkenyl or (substituted)alkynyl]. EXAMPLE:Methyl O-allyloxycarbonylmethyl 5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)- 2-nitrobenzohydroximate. USE:A herbicide having broad herbicidal spectrum and excellent selective herbicidal activity and effective at a decreased rate of application. Excellent characteristics can be exhibited especially by foliar treatment. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting an o-carboxyalkyl-2-nitro-5-(substituted phenoxy)benzohydroximic acid ester of formula II with a halogen compound of formula III (X is halogen).
