PURPOSE:To improve durability, running performance, electromagnetic conversion characteristic, etc., by maintaining two kinds of surface roughnesses of a magnetic layer within a specific range. CONSTITUTION:Ferromagnetic powder, binder, phosphate dispersant and other additives are added together with a suitable solvent into a dispersing and mixing machine and thereafter, a magnetic coating compd. is prepd. by the mixing machine. A hardener is charged to such compd., then the compd. is coated on the surface of a nonmagnetic substrate. The nonmagnetic substrate obtd. in such a manner is subjected to a magnetic field orientation treatment or mechanical orientation treatment in such a manner that the hexagonal plate faces of hexagonal ferrite line up in the direction perpendicular to the surface thereof. Such substrate is then subjected to a drying and smoothing treatment. The magnetic recording medium having 0.03-0.2mum surface roughness of the magnetic layer and <=1 surface roughness ratio expressed by (roughness by projections)/(roughness by dents) and having various excellent characteristics is thus obtd.
