PURPOSE:To decrease the number of component parts of a code detector by setting previously a pulse count value at the position corresponding to each bit part of a member to be detected for codes. CONSTITUTION:A mobile device 1 contains a pulse encoder 4 interlocked with a wheel 3, a photoelectric switch 5 serving as a detector for codes of a code plate 2 provided on a driving path as a member to be detected for codes, and a controller 6 consisting of a microcomputer. The plate 2 contains bit parts having their series directions set in parallel to the driving direction of the device 1, deleted parts 7a and 7b sandwiching bit parts up to 2<0>-2<7> and marker parts 8a and 8b. These parts 7a/7b and 8a/8b are set symmetrically at the front and back sides. The controller 6 decides the presence or absence of the plate 2 and reads the codes of the bit part after the switch 5 counts pulses existing at the front end position A through the rear end position B of the part 8a of the plate 2 and compares this pulse count value with the value set previously.
