PURPOSE:To show durability clearly and to obtain high relilability, by attaching a means which records the number of times of start up and stop of a device being permissible for a non-volatile memory as a guarantee value data, reads out the data at a start up time, checks whether the data is within a guarantee value range, and updates the content of the data at the time of stopping. CONSTITUTION:A hard disk controller 3 performs format control and the READ/ WRITE control of the data according to the content programmed by a CPU1. The cylinder map of media is shown in the neighborhood of a hard disk device 4, and a log area which shows an activity status in addition to an ordinary data area is allocated. When the hard disk device 4 is turned ON, the CPU1 reads out log information on the media, and the number of times of power ON/WRITE being permissible for the hard disk is set on the log information area, and it is checked whether the activity status is within the guarantee range based on the above information, and the log information is updated and written before the device is turned OFF. In such a way, it is possible to recognize the activity status of the hard disk clearly, and to recognize the lowering of the reliability due to reduction of durability in advance.
