PURPOSE:To attain the original reading without scattering the light from the light source for reading externally through an original platen even when the reader is operated without using an original cover by providing a light shielding means movable in a direction orthogonal to the moving direction of a light source between the light source and the original platen. CONSTITUTION:A moving carrier has not only a light source 24, a mirror 27 for optical path change and an opening 37 to ensure the optical path but also has a shutter 35 constituting a light shielding means shielding the light from the light source 24. The shutter 38 is movable from the position where the upper part of the light source 24 is opened to the position between the light source 24 and the original platen, shielding a part of the light source to block the irradiation to the original platen by the drive of a motor 42 and the original radiation width by the light source 24 is changed optionally. Thus, when the original cover retaining the original on the original platen is not used in case of the reading of a thick book or the like, the unnecessary light from the light source is not scattered externally.
