PURPOSE:To obtain a light-resistant water-retaining agent having excellent water-absorption and remarkably improved light-stability in water-absorbed state and suitable especially as a soil improver, water-retaining agent for agricultural and horticultural use, water-stopping agent for construction, etc., by compounding a highly water-absorbing resin with a small amount of an ultraviolet absorber. CONSTITUTION:The objective light-resistant water-retaining agent can be produced by adding (A) a highly water-absorbing resin, preferably a polymer containing carboxyl group and/or alkali metal carboxylate group originated from acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid (e.g. crosslinked material of partially neutralized polyacrylic acid salt) and (B) 0.1-10wt.% ultraviolet absorber, preferably a benzophenone-type ultraviolet absorber (e.g. 2,4- dihydroxybenzophenone) to (C) a solvent inert to both A and B and capable of dissolving the component B (e.g. ethanol), stirring the mixture and removing the solvent from the mixture.
