PURPOSE:To express the image on the surface of paper by the gradation of a dot unit, by mounting a means for generating gradation data showing gradation, a means for setting number-of-time data determining the printing number of times of a pin according to the gradation data and a control means for controlling the operation of the pin so as to perform printing the number of times according to the number-of-time data at the same printing position. CONSTITUTION:A gradation data generation apparatus 10 has a light emitting element and a light receiving element, and the light emitted from the light emitting element irradiates a manuscript and the reflected light thereof is received by the light receiving element (e.g. CCD) to generate gradation data showing gradation. The gradation data generated as analogue data is converted to digital data by an A/D converter 11. The digitalized gradation data is inputted to CPU 12 having ROM and RAM mounted therein to be stored therein. CPU 12 sets number-of-time data determining the printing number of times at the same printing position of a pin corresponding to the gradation data and stores the position data on paper and the number-of-time data in RAM and outputs the same to a printing head driver.
