PURPOSE:To extremely readily and efficiently remove quinones causing coloring and obtain high-grade monohydric phenols, by flowing an aprotic solvent, e.g. n-hexane, etc., down to come into contact with colored monohydric phenols. CONSTITUTION:An aprotic solvent, e.g. n-heptane, cyclohexane, diethyl ether, dichloromethane, etc., is fed and flowed down to the upper part of a container filled with solid monohydric phenols, e.g. phenol, p-tert-butylphenol, etc., and brought into contact therewith to remove substances, causing coloring and contained therein and purify the monohydric phenols. The volume of the solvent used may be within the range of about 0.5-6 times, preferably 1.0-4 times based on the filled volume. The solvent can be recovered, readily purified and reused by distillation, etc.
