PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing an optically active cyanomethyl ester useful as a raw material for agricultural chemical readily, economically and in high yield, by reacting an aldehyde with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde (e.g. 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde) shown by the formula R<1>-CHO (R<1> is 1-8C alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl) is reacted with hydrogen cyanide by the use of an (R)- or (S)-5-imidazolylmethyl-3-substituted hydantoin shown by formula I (R<2> is cycloalkyl, aryl or optically active aryl) as a catalyst in a solventless state or in an aprotic solvent at -10-35 deg.C to give the aimed compound shown by formula II. The amount of the catalyst used is 1X10<-6>mol based on 1mol aldehyde and the amount of hydrogen cyanide is 1-3mol. |
