PRODUCTION OF N,N-DIPHENYLACYLAMIDES

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a dyestuff for pressure-sensitive recording paper in a short time and in high yield in reacting an N-phenylacylamide with a halobenzene in the presence of an acid binder and a copper catalyst, by using a specific solvent. CONSTITUTION:An N-phenylacylamide shown by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are lower alkyl; R<3> is H or lower alkyl) is reacted with a halobenzene shown by formula II (R<4> is lower alkyl; X is halogen; n is 0-5) by the use of a cyclic urea (especially preferably 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone) as a solvent in the presence of a copper catalyst and an acid binder in a feed molar ratio of the compound shown by formula II to the compound shown by formula I of 0.5-2.0 at 150-250 deg.C under normal pressure-5kg/cm<2>G to give a compound shown by formula III. Both copper powder and iodine are used as the copper catalyst and potassium carbonate is preferable as the acid binder.
