PURPOSE:To speed up exposure and to prolong the life of a flash lamp by providing flash lamps whose number is an integral multiple of the number of lamps which emit light normally, and emitting the respective flash lamps alternately or in order. CONSTITUTION:A copying machine 1 is equipped with two flash lamps 2a and 2b, which are emitted alternately or in order by a control 3, thereby performing exposure. Further, if a flash lamp decreases in the quantity of light or fails to emit light while several flash lamps are made to emit light in order, the remaining lamps are put in operation until the lamp is replaced. Consequently, the exposure is speeded up and a burden on each flash lamp is reduced, so the life of the flash lamps is prolonged and the down time of the copying machine is shortened greatly.
