The threshold layer of a refractive index acts to confine fundamental mode fields before they leak out into the cladding. The fundamental mode wavelength is shifted to large wavelengths or is eliminated. The fibre has a core, inner cladding and threshold cladding of diameters 8.2, 13 and 22.2 microns respectively and has an index difference of 0.3,-0.4, 0.075 percent respectively. The wavelength range is from 1.36 to 1.73 microns and the max. dispersion over the range is one ps/nmkm. The characteristic of the dispersion coefficient exhibits three zeros for the fundamental mode. A dispersion min. of higher order is achieved of all three zones coincide at one wavelength.
