The apparatus includes a substantially enclosed molten solder container (12), the container including a contained space above the molten solder (68); a tube (36, 34, 30) for conveying the molten solder in the container to the workpiece (14) where the ratio of the transverse cross-sectional area of the container to the transverse cross-sectional area of the tube is no more than about 10:1; and a source (15) connected to the contained space for introducing a pressurized gas into the space to raise the solder through the tube to a predetermined level adjacent the workpiece and maintaining the solder at the predetermined level to thus effect soldering/desoldering with the molten solder. The apparatus includes a replaceable nozzle (10) suited to any particular workpiece, such as a PCB with components (16), with which it is intended for use. Thus, a variety of differently-configured nozzles is disclosed. In some embodiments (Figs 18-20, not shown) a capillary tube can be attached to or included in the nozzle. <IMAGE>
