The holding plate, which is shown in cross-section, has a plate base body (2) with intermediate webs (5) which form a common contact surface (6) for a number plate, which surface (6) is bounded on the outside by means of wall webs (3) which exhibit on at least one side of the baseplate (2) a fixedly moulded-on holding flap (9) at a vertical distance from the contact surface (6) to permit the positive gripping of a number plate (8) from above. On at least one holding plate edge there are, however, moulded gripping flaps (11) which project downwards in a barb-like manner and the ends (12) of which are rounded off. The number plate can therefore, after insertion beneath a number of holding flaps, be pressed by its edge from above to a position below the barb-shaped gripping flaps and held there by the action of a spring. This is especially suitable for use with number plates, which must remain replaceable, for a short period. Securing is by means of a U-shaped clamping strip (14) which can be fastened to the baseplate, in different positions, by means of lock recesses (22, 23) and saw teeth (18, 19). The number plate is therefore held at a plurality of levels of security by different means. At least in the final holding level, it cannot be released without destroying the engagement means of the holding plate. <IMAGE>
