A covering apparatus for a swimming pool or the like, having a covering sheet (1) which can be wound onto a winding shaft (43), having profile rails (2) which are fastened along opposite pool borders and in which the covering sheet (1) is guided and held, by means of guide elements (13) arranged on opposite side borders, when drawing it off the winding shaft (43) and winding it onto said shaft, and having in each case one pulling element (12) which is assigned to the profile rails (2), acts on the covering sheet (1) and is intended for unwinding the covering sheet (1) from the winding shaft (43). In order to ensure simple guidance of the covering sheet (1) in the profile rails (2) without twisting, each pulling element is a non-expansible pulling band (12) which is fastened at that end of the covering sheet (1) which is directed away from the winding shaft (43), which is guided around a deflection roller at the far end of the profile rail (2) and which can be wound up onto a winding roller (45). The winding rollers (45) for the two pulling bands (12) can rotate synchronously (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
