Instead of the usual inlet and exhaust valves only one single valve is provided both for exhaust and refill, for which reason it remains cool. Fresh and exhaust gas are distributed to intake and outlet port by means of a shuttle slide valve immediately downstream of the valve. This shuttle slide valve may be designed as a rotary slide, sliding spool or annular slide valve or as a rotary slide valve combined with the camshaft. Advantages: cool valve permits higher compression with reduced consumption. There is a saving of 12 valves, one camshaft with drive and all accessories compared to a four cylinder, four valve engine, which results in lower manufacturing, assembly and maintenance costs and other advantages, such as, for example, lower weight. <IMAGE>
