The cylinder assembly of a sheet fed rotary printing press has grippers (54) pivoted inside a notch in a blanket cylinder (20) which contacts a plate cylinder. Phases of rotation of the plate (21) and blanket cylinders are adjusted so that the leading edge of the plate opposes a front end of the notch in the blanket cylinder slightly downstream of a leading edge of the blanket. A cam surface of a cam (57) for opening and closing the grippers is shaped so that they are kept open when the leading edge of the printing plate opposes the front end of the notch in the blanket cylinder.
