For a reciprocating four-stroke internal combustion engine with external mixture formation, inlet and outlet valves, twist-generating inlet ducts and a combustion recess, arranged in the piston, the shape of which is rotationally symmetrical and widens constantly from its bottom to the piston head, the additional features are indicated, with which realisation of high compression ratios, on average up to two points higher in relation to conventional combustion systems with the same fuel quality, are possible, even with regard to a satisfactory full-load torque course and low full-load fuel consumptions (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
