In a process for the surface or pulp sizing of paper or board, there are used optionally anionic, hydrophobic sizing agents of the formula <IMAGE> where Q1 is <IMAGE> A1 is C2-C3-alkylene, X1 and X2 are each -O-, -NH- or <IMAGE> , Y1 is -S-Z1, -S-R4, -S-OC-R4, -S-OC-NH-R4, -O-OC-R4, -NH2 or -NH-CO-R4, Z1 is an alkali metal or hydrogen, R1, R2 and R3 are each C1-C22-alkyl or -alkenyl, at least one of the R1, R2 or R3 radicals being C16-C22-alkyl or -alkenyl, R4 is C1-C22-alkyl, C1-C22-alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl optionally substituted by one or more carboxyl or sulpho groups in free or salt form, and n is 1 or 2, in combination with conventional, optionally cationic retention aids. The compounds of the above formula in which there are <IMAGE> are novel and are prepared from an unsaturated diamide with hydrogen sulphide and optionally an alkali metal hydroxide, a haloalkane, a halocarboxylic acid or an isocyanate; from a hydroxydiamide and a halocarboxylic acid; from an amine and an amino acid and optionally a halocarboxylic acid; from an amine and mercaptoic acid and optionally an alkali metal hydroxide, a haloalkane, a halocarboxylic acid or an isocyanate; from an amine of glycolic acid and a halocarboxylic acid; or from a primary amine, glycocoll and optionally a halocarboxylic acid.
