In order to avoid interferences which can be triggered by the exchangeable supply containers (5) in ink jet printers becoming empty, such as air entering the ink supply system, interruption of the printout operation, etc., constant monitoring of the ink supply in the supply containers (5) is required. The invention is based on the object of providing a measuring device, in particular for the residual ink in a flexible ink bag in ink jet printers, which is simple, robust, functionally reliable and cost-effective. This object is achieved by measuring the electrostatic capacitance, which varies with the ink volume, between a pair of electrodes, in that a conductive board (21), which can be mounted freely on the ink bag (11) in the supply container (5) and can be lowered during the emptying of the ink bag (11), serves as one electrode, and a hollow needle (8), provided for the connection between the ink bag (11) and the ink supply system of the ink jet printer, serves as the second electrode. The simple and inexpensive measuring device allows precise monitoring of the residual quantity of ink in the ink bags (11) of the supply containers. <IMAGE>
