NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R is (substituted) 1,3-phenylene or p,p'-diphenylene]. EXAMPLE:1,3-Di(2-thienyl)benzene. USE:A raw material for producing a polymer capable of developing green color by electrochromism and useful as an organic display material. PREPARATION:A halogenated aromatic compound having halogen atoms at 1,3-sites of a (substituted) phenylene or p,p'-sites of biphenyl and a thienyl magnesium halide of formula II (X is halogen) are used as starting raw materials and are subjected to coupling reaction to obtain the objective compound. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an organic metal complex such as dichloro[bis(triphenylphosphine)]nickel in a dehydrated solvent in an inert atmosphere. The halogenated aromatic compound used as a starting raw material is e.g. 1,3-dichlorobenzene.
