0081384 The invention relates to a process for manufacturing a chip-cutting tool made of an iron-based metal alloy, which tool is provided with a wear-resistant covering which is based on interstitial phases, in which process the wear-resistant covering is formed by means of the condensation of cathode material which has been vaporized with an electric arc, and with titanium or a titanium- based metal alloy being used as the cathode material. When a covering of a certain thickness has been produced, the voltage is increased to a value which is as great as when preheating the chip-cutting tool, and oxygen- containing redox gas or redox gas mixture is fed into a vacuum chamber and the chip-cutting tool is heated to a eutectic decomposition temperature in a pseudobinary "iron-titanium" system. After this, the chip-cutting tool is annealed in an oxygen-containing redox gas or redox gas mixture atmosphere for 10-40 minutes at a temperature which corresponds to the Martensite conversion of the pseudobinary "iron-titanium" system.
