PURPOSE:To obtain a sufficient transmission light quantity in a state a shutter is ON, by impressing a high frequency electric field to a liquid crystal material, and thereafter, repeating a state of non-electric field and an impressed state of a superposed wave electric field, and also, applying an ON electric field and the superposed wave electric field, and thereafter, repeating the non-electric field and the superposed wave electric field, and thereafter, giving selectively an OFF electric field. CONSTITUTION:A high frequency electric field is applied to a liquid crystal material 16 interposed between electrodes 14a, 14b, and thereafter, a state of a non-electric field to which an electric field is not applied, and a state to which a superposed wave electric field of a high frequency and a low frequency has been applied are repeated. Thereafter, an ON electric field for returning to an initial state by applying a low frequency electric field, and a superposed wave electric field are applied, and thereafter, the non-electric field and the superposed wave electric field are repeated. Subsequently, an OFF electric field for returning to an initial state by applying a low frequency electric field is given selectively. Accordingly, by utilizing a high frequency history effect and slowness of a response speed of the non-electric field and the superposed waveform, an ON state can be enlarged to a part of a non-selection period. In such a way, a sufficient light quantity can be obtained.
