PURPOSE:To enable accurate detection of the head and tail edges of sea weed with a simple apparatus, by judging a line to be edge of the sea weed when the sum of the number of pixels of the sea weed in one line image data exceeds a set value. CONSTITUTION:Sea weed 5 fed with a transport section 1 is imaged by a line sensor 12 and an image data obtained is converted with an S/P conversion circuit 13 to a parallel image from the serial image to be taken in for one line. A judging circuit 14 counts the number of pixels of the sea weed in the image data and the results of counting are checked for level about a set value. When the results exceed the set value, a CPU 15 determined the tip of the sea weed 5 to enter a field of view of the sensor 12 and gets the image data stored into an RAM 17. When the number of pixels in the image data is below the set value, the CPU 15 determines the tail edge of the sea weed 5 to be off the field of view of the sensor 12 and reads out an image data of the RAM 17 sequentially to check for the quality of the sea weed 5, thereby sorting it as acceptance or rejection.
