PURPOSE:To prevent the latent image surface of a photosensitive drum from being damaged, and to smoothly engage and input shaft with the driving system terminal of a device body side, by inserting a developing unit in parallel in the axial direction of an image carrying body and engaging and holding it by a unit holding means, so that the unit can move so as to be allowed to contact and separated, in the direction orthogonal to the latent image surface of the image carrying body. CONSTITUTION:A developing unit 3 is inserted in parallel along the axial direction of an image carrying body (photosensitive drum) 2, while maintaining a separated state against the image carrying body and engaged and held by a unit holding means 10, and through this unit holding means 10, the developing unit 3 is positioned and held so that it can move so as to be allowed to contact and separated, in the direction orthogonal to the latent image surface of the image carrying body 2. Accordingly, a moving line P of the developing unit 3 becomes a movement in the orthogonal direction against the latent image surface of the photosensitive drum 2 at the time of setting, from a parallel movement running along the axial direction of the photosensitive drum 2 at the time of insertion. In such a way, the input shaft 301 of the developing unit 3 and a driving system terminal 101 of a device body side are engaged smoothly, and also, the damage of the latent image surface of the photosensitive drum 2 due to the developing unit 3 can be prevented surely.
