PURPOSE:To form a chemically converted film on the surface of a metal in a simple stage, by bringing a chemical conversion treating agent capable of forming a chemically converted film with the metal into contact with the surface of the metal in a dry or wet state. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of chemical conversion treating agent selected among water soluble, slightly soluble or insoluble phosphates, chromates, oxalates and silicates is rubbed on the surface of a metal by means of a wire brush. The surface of the metal may be shot- or sand-blasted with a blasting material mixed with the treating agent. Since the treating agent is rubbed or blasted to the surface of the metal together with a shot blasting agent or matter under load or shock, a chemically converted film can be formed on the surface of the metal in a dry or wet state without passing through troublesome stages such as degreasing, washing, neutralizing and drying stages.
