PURPOSE:To prevent overrun of a power turbine during exhaust brake, by a method wherein the gear ratio of a gear train during non-operation of an exhaust brake is decreased over that of a gear train through which to transmit the rotation force of the power turbine to a crank shaft. CONSTITUTION:During operation of an exhaust brake, a rotary valve 31 is actuated to close an exhaust gas passage 4b. The drive force of a crank shaft 15 is transmitted to a power turbine 12 through a first crank shaft gear 23, an idle gear 29, a first intermediate gear 28, an input output gear 20, and a fluid joint 21, and the power turbine 12 is reversed to effect a negative work. During non-operation of the exhaust brake, an exhaust gas passage 4d is opened, and the drive force of the power turbine 12 is transmitted to a crank shaft 15 through the input output shaft 20, a second intermediate gear 27, and a second crank shaft 24.
