PURPOSE:To reduce fixed pattern noise by adding a noise appearing in a negative direction during the closure of a horizontal switching element to a spike noise appearing in a positive direction during the opening. CONSTITUTION:A solid-state image pickup element 11 consists of plural photodiodes, a vertical switching element, and a horizontal switching element. The output of the horizontal switching element contains spike noise owing to gate- source capacity and gate-drain capacity. The output of a preamplifier 12 is delayed at a delay circuit 13 as long as by half of a horizontal clock period. The output of the circuit 13 and the output of the preamplifier 12 are summed up by an adding circuit 14 and passed through a sampling circuit 15 and an LPF16 to obtain a light signal component containing no fixed pattern noise.
