PURPOSE:To obtain a high-density recording medium having high output and high resolving power by incorporating at least one extremely thin nonmagnetic metallic films into a magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A nonmagnetic underlying layer 2 consisting of chromium, titanium, etc., is formed by sputtering or vacuum deposition, etc., on an underlying body 1 and a thin magnetic metallic film 3 is formed to a prescribed thickness by sputtering or vapor deposition, etc., on the nonmagnetic underlying layer 2. The extremely thin nonmagnetic metallic films 4 are formed thereon. From this stage on, the operations to form the thin film 3 and to form the thin film 4 are repeated prescribed times and again the thin film 3 is formed to constitute the magnetic recording layer. At least >=1 thin films 4 are incorporated into the thin films 3 in the above-mentioned manner, by which the coercive force of the magnetic layer is maintained in spite of an increase in the thickness of the magnetic layer and an excellent hysteresis characteristic of a large squareness ratio is obtd. The magnetic recording medium suitable for the high-density recording of the high output and high resolving power is thereby obtd.
