PURPOSE:To detect defect of the magnetic medium and the necessity of maintenance of the titled device early by counting read or write errors caused in operation and printing out the result of count onto a rear side of a reel flange of the magnetic tape medium in read/write operation. CONSTITUTION:A control section 2 keeps counting number of errors (those during retrial inclusive) detected from the logical start block of a magnetic tape 6 till the end of processing (reception of rewind or unload from host device). On the other hand, the control section 2 receiving a rewind or unload instruction uses a control signal 11 to read the result of a counter 5 and uses a control signal 12 to read it. The result of count of number of errors obtained in this way is sent to a print section 3 via a control signal 13 after the end of rewind or unload instruction to the medium and is printed on a rear face of a reel flange of the magnetic tape 6 by the print section 3. Thus, defect of the magnetic tape medium and the maintenance information of the device are obtained early.
