PURPOSE:To transfer a toner image at a high transfer rate in a transfer stroke and to separate a transfer material from the peripheral surface of a latent image carrier in a return stroke by providing a transfer material bearing part so that it can be inclined to the moving direction of a transfer material carrying body. CONSTITUTION:A transfer paper carrying member 17 which has a gripper 16 to grip the front end of transfer paper 15 is so provided that it can be linearly moved back and forth in the tangential direction of a photosensitive drum 4. At the time of transfer, the gripper 16 has the free end raised and the front end part of the transfer paper 15 gripped by this gripper is inclined in such direction that it approaches the photosensitive drum 4, and the transfer paper 15 is elastically pressed against the photosensitive drum 4 in the transfer part. In the going stroke of the transfer paper carrying member 17, the gripper 16 has the free end lowered, and as the result, the front end part of the transfer paper is inclined in the returning direction so that it is separated from the photosensitive drum 4. Thus, the toner image is transferred at a high transfer rate at the time of transfer and the already transferred toner image is not disturbed by contact with the photosensitive drum at the time of returning, and a compact multiple copying machine of high reliability is obtained.
