PURPOSE:To quickly, surely and quantitatively detect slag level in a converter by emitting monocycle pulse wave to slag on the molten steel surface and measuring the time after emission to return back by reflection. CONSTITUTION:A built-in antenna 4 in the water-cooled box 3 is set at the upper part of hood 2 in the converter 1. The antenna 4 emits monocycle pulse wave A to the slag 10 in the converter 1 through a hole 2a of hood 2. The reflective wave of monocycle pulse wave A returned back by reflecting on the slag 10 surface is received and the time from emission to receive is measured. From this time, the distance from the antenna 4 to the slag 10 surface is operated. Laser controller 5, image converting device 6 and monitor 7 are connected to the antenna 4. Further, from the distance from the antenna 4 and the slag surface, the slag level of foamed slag 10 is detected.
