PURPOSE:To improve a recording density by sequentially connecting video elements of an N system the time base of which is compressed to 1/N and synthesizing with successive original video signals. CONSTITUTION:The time base of the respective video signals time divided into N in the number is extended to N times for every one horizontal scanning period to obtain the successive video signals of the N system and FM modulated. Then, the one horizontal scanning period of these FM video signal time divided into N in the number, sequentially taken out to synthesize the FM video signals of a (N+1) system and sequentially recorded by magnetic heads 71-73 of (N+1) in the number disposed at an equal interval of 360 deg./(N+1) on a magnetic tape 18 wound on a rotary drum 8 by an angle larger than (860 deg.-(360 deg./(N+1)). Then, the FM video signal is reproduced by the magnetic heads 71-73 from a recording system and the magnetic tape 18 recorded by this recording system, thereafter demodulated, the time base of the video signal of the demodulated video signals of the (N+1) system is compressed to 1/N and the compressed video signal is synthesized with the original video signal of the N system. Thereby, a recording can be executed with the high density.
