PURPOSE:To attain the processing of an erroneous pattern in the unit of bits even when the error correction code in the unit of words is in use by revising a correction mode depending on an error number and error pattern so as to apply error correction at the reproduction and applying the inverse conversion of the data. CONSTITUTION:The data modulation/demodulation and error correction process ing is conducted in an opposite order to that of a conventional processing. That is, data conversion required for recording/reproduction is applied and parity is added and recorded next. Then error correction processing is applied by an error correction circuit 15 at first in the reproduction and then data inverse conversion is applied. Thus, one bit error is processed as one bit error pattern. Thus, even when the error correction code in the unit of words is in use, random error and burst error are processed efficiently by discriminating the erroneous pattern.
