PURPOSE:To obtain a screen with or without subtitle at the time of reproduction by sampling subtitle signal, decoding and selectively superimposing on the reproducing signal of a VTR when the subtitle signal is present in the reproducing signal of the VTR. CONSTITUTION:When a character signal is superimposed on the vertical retrace line of a TV signal, the superimposed character signal of 10H-16H and 21H, forinstance, is sampled by a character signal sampling circuit 2. When the character signal of the subtitle program is present in the sampled character signal, a code indicating it is read by a character signal decoder 5 to transform only the character signal of the subtitle program from a horizontal direction to a vertical direction and stored in a memory 6. Every one subtitle decision signal is outputted for every one H from a pulse generating circuit 7 according to the character signal fo the subtitle program stored in the memory 6 and horizontal synchronizing signal from a synchronizing separating circuit 3. In a synthesizing circuit 4, the subtitle decision signal is superimposed on a hatched portion 19. Thereby, at the time of the reproduction, the screen with the subtitle or the screen without subtitle can be obtained.
