PURPOSE:To sufficiently evaporate a cooled liquid by a small-sized device and to uniformly carry out resin coating, by passing drawn fiber through a liquid having a boiling point lower than room temperature and passing the fiber through space isolated from peripheral space and coating the fiber with a resin. CONSTITUTION:A preform 1 for optical fiber is heated and melted in a core pipe 3 of a furnace 2 and a fiber 4 is drawn from the tip of the preform at a constant stress. The drawn fiber 4 is once passed through a liquid 9 having a boiling point in a temperature range lower than room temperature and coated with a resin by a coating die 5. The liquid 9 is brought into contact with the drawn fiber and instantly evaporated or sufficiently evaporated before the resin coating to rapidly cool the drawn fiber 4. In the operation, a container 13 charged with the liquid 9 and space through which the drawn fiber 4 is passed to the coating die 5 are isolated from peripheral space by a cover 14. Liquid nitrogen or liquid argon is proper as the liquid 9. Consequently, an optical fiber 7 uniformly coated with a resin is obtained in high efficiency without bringing the liquid 9 into the coating die 5. |
