NEW MATERIAL:Trifluoromethyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid of formula I. USE:Intermediate raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, liquid crystals, etc. Since both nitro group and carboxyl group are reactive functional groups, the compound is useful as a synthetic intermediate for various fluorine- containing aromatic derivatives. PREPARATION:A benzotrifluoride derivative of formula II [X is COY, CY3 or CO2H (Y is halogen)] is nitrated with a nitration agent such as nitric acid. As an alternative method, the derivative is hydrolyzed simultaneous to nitration to obtain a mixture of nitro-substituted 4-trifluoromethylbenzoic acid isomers. The mixture is partially neutralized with a neutralization agent (e.g. NaOH) and the isomers are separated to obtain the compound of formula I.
