PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound from phenol and isobutylene in high yield while inhibiting oligomerization of the isobutylene, by using a specific solid acid catalyst and removing the above-mentioned catalyst from the reaction liquid immediately after finishing the feed of the isobutylene at the same time. CONSTITUTION:A phenol such as recovery phenol etc., containing pure phenol or/and butyl phenol is reacted with isobutylene such as pure isobutylene or isobutylene-containing butene gas, while feeding the above-mentioned isobutylene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst containing <=2mgKOH/g free acid value and 20meq/100g of solid acid amount having pKa of -3.0, e.g. active clay or acid clay and the above-mentioned catalyst is removed from the reaction liquid, preferably by filtration immediately after finishing the feed of the isobutylene to inhibit oligomerization of the isobutylene and the titled compound is obtained in high yield without needing operation such as neutralization, water washing, using the above-mentioned inexpensive catalyst. |
