PURPOSE:To record/reproduce character information by providing a means separating the character information from a video signal, using a digital voice signal processing circuit in time division and recording the character information in the blanking period of the video signal and a means storing tentatively the reproduced character information and using a digital voice signal reproducing circuit in time division. CONSTITUTION:A composite video signal is inputted (101), separated (104) into luminance/color difference signals, and they are subject to FM modulation 106, 107 respectively. Voice inputs 102, 103 are subject to A/D conversion, and the character information separated (108) from the input 101 is stored (111) altogether. After a correction code is written (112) in the memory 111, the result is modulated (113), the character information is retarded (114) and recorded via a head changeover switch 116. A switch 117 is thrown in the opposite position to that of the switch 116, the character information is separated (125) into the voice, the result is demodulated (126), error correction 128 is applied by a prescribed algorithm and the result is stored and converted in a form of video signal, inserted (127) again in the blank period of the composite video signal and outputted (132). Timing is taken based on the luminance signal and a track C is utilized as the character information.
