摘要 PURPOSE:To uniformly and satisfactorily orientate a liquid crystal molecule by executing thermal refining which includes slow cooling while applying an electric field. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell 10 is formed by injecting a ferroelectric liquid crystal 8 between opposed first and second substrates 1, 2 on which a transparent electrode and oriented films 3 and 4 and 5 are laminated, respectively. This cell 10 is heated until the liquid crystal 8 goes to isotropic, and brought to slow cooling at a necessary speed. In such a case, uniform orientation for applying a voltage to a transparent electrode 3 from a constant-voltage source 11 and applying an electric field to a liquid crystal electron within a temperature range including a temperature for transferring from a smectic A phase to a chiral smectic C phase is obtained in a state that a memory characteristic is scarcely deteriorated. Subsequently, when the cell 10 is heated and brought to slow cooling again in the same way, the memory characteristic is recovered and the orientation of a liquid crystal molecule goes to uniform and satisfactory, and the contrast ratio is also improved.
