PURPOSE:To execute an exact full collation in a short time by reading arising line number/unit at every axis and segmenting a collating image by using an average address (approximate center point) of its high density area as the center point. CONSTITUTION:A solid-state image pickup element is contained in the lower part of an image pickup window 1 of the upper face of a prism of a finger-print image pickup device. A finger holder 2 is fixed to a base 3, a finger holder 4 is movable to the right and left through a spring material 5, and for fingerprint is brought to an image pickup. As for the finger-print which has been brought to an image pickup, a rising line number/unit is read at X and Y axes, and by analyzing its variation portion, an average address of range in which a density distribution exceeds a prescribed value is derived separately in both axes, and it becomes an approximate center point C. By segmenting a collating image centering around the approximate center point, and extracting a representative part of the fingerpoint, it will suffice that full collation of not the whole image but the segmented size is executed, therefore, the processing time fan be shortened.
