PURPOSE:To obtain an image having no color mixing by supplying carriers to the surface of an electrostatic latent image and recycling toner when a copy is taken by using black toner, and stopping the supply of carriers and removing recovered color. toner when a color copy is taken. CONSTITUTION:When a black print is made by using black toner, black toner remaining on the surface of an electrostatic latent image and magnetic carriers in a no-image area are both collected in a cleaning device 8 without being transferred to copying paper. Then only the black toner suitable to development among the collected toner, carriers, and foreign matter is supplied to a developing device 5 together with the carriers and defective toner and the foreign matter are removed. When a color print is made by using the color toner, the color toner is supplied to the electrostatic image formed in the image formation area of the electrostatic latent image carrier 1, but a control mechanism stops the operation of a carrier supplying mechanism 11, so no magnetic carriers are supplied to the no-image area of the carrier 1. The color toner is therefore removed in recycling operation.
