PURPOSE:To detect torque with high accuracy sufficient to endure the repeated applications of torque and mechanical impact in a torque sensor utilizing a thin magnetic metal strip with magnetostriction by forming a non-magnetic material layer on the surface of a torque transmitting shaft including the fixed thin magnetic metal strip. CONSTITUTION:A thin magnetic metal strip 24 is applied in advance with induced magnetic anisotropies Ku' by heat treatment in magnetic field in the directions with angles theta (for example, + or -45 deg.) of inclination with respect to the circumferential direction of a torque transmitting shaft 20. Further, after the thin magnetic metal strip 24 and the torque transmitting shaft 20 made of a ferromagnetic material provided with an adhesive layer made of a polyimide heat resisting synthetic resin therebetween are fixedly attached to each other, a coating layer 25 is fixedly formed on the surface of the thin magnetic metal strip 24 by chrome plating. A U-shaped magnetic core 26 is arranged in non- contact with the thin magnetic metal stripe 24 and the coating layer 25. After exciting and detecting coils 28 and 30, respectively, are applied, given alternating magnetic field ranging from several kHz to several hundred kHz is applied and the torque of the torque transmitting shaft 2 in rotation is measured.
