[Also in Division C3] Tetraphenols of formula where R 1 is H or C 1-4 alkyl and n is 1 or 2 may be prepared by esterifying the diol bis [4-(#- hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] dimethyl methane with the corresponding acid, or with acetoacetic acid or levulinic acid and phenol or a substituted phenol. In examples (1) bis[3,3-(4<SP>1</SP>-hydroxy- 3<SP>1</SP>-t. butylphenyl) butanoic acid ester of bis (#- hydroxyethyl) dioxydiphenyl dimethyl methane is prepared by reacting o-t. butylphenol with the acetoacetic acid ester of said diol and (2) bis [4,4-(4<SP>1</SP>-hydroxy-3<SP>1</SP>-sec. butylphenyl)] pentanoic acid ester of said diol is prepared by esterification of the diol with the acid in xylene in the presence of p-toluenesulphonic acid as catalyst. |
