Polyfumaramides with short recurring units of the formula -(CO-CH=CH-COX)-m, where this group has the trans configuration, and where X is the residue of (substituted) piperazine, hexahydropyrimidine or hexahydropyridazine, are prepared by reacting a fumaryl dihalide with an amine. The polymers have high molecular weight, with an inherent viscosity of > 0.2 dl/g (as a solution of 0.5g of polymer/100 cc. of solvent at 30 deg.C). They are generally white solids with a melting point 280 deg.C. They are usually soluble in the normal solvents, and in strong acids, and the solutions are stable over long periods. The polymers can be obtained as fibres or films from their solutions. |
